Common Skincare Mistakes

July 25, 2016

Whether you spend just 30 seconds every morning or have a dedicated pre-bedtime ritual, practically everyone has a skincare routine. And while we all have the best intentions when it comes to taking care of our complexion, we sometimes sabotage our skin without realizing it. Your daily habits make a major difference when it comes to preventing damage and premature aging. Jacqueline Brennan a Skin Therapist with Inskin Medi Spa Neutral Bay, shares the ten most common skincare mistakes—and how to fix them.

Using too many exfoliating products too often.

“Over-exfoliating can lead to redness and irritation and constantly stripping your skin can actually make the skin greasy as it overcompensates for lack of oil.

“Physical exfoliating scrubs that have sharp, uneven grains can tear or damage the skin,” Jacqueline says.

Rather than going for granules and grains, Jacqueline suggests trying non-abrasive exfoliators that use AHA, BHA and fruit acids such as GELÉE GOMMANTE DOUCEUR Exfoliating melting gel with papaya extracts which leaves your skin feeling amazing!!

She says this “can help prevent sensitive skin from being over-exfoliated. Remember, normal to oily skin only needs exfoliating twice a week.”

Leaving skin bare for longer than 60 seconds after cleansing.

After cleansing, you must immediately use an alcohol-free toner and moisturizer. If you leave your skin bare for more than one minute, it will start to dehydrate as the dry air sucks moisture out of the skin. Perform your skin care routine quickly, and be sure to always leave your toner damp on the skin. This will leave your skin protected and avoid the tight and dry feeling.

Not applying SPF.

Want to look older faster? Didn’t think so. Ignore this rule at your own risk.

Jacqueline says: “Come rain or shine, we should all wear SPF during the day as the sun is the biggest cause of wrinkles. The trick is to find a sunscreen that slips elegantly under foundation and moisturiser and becomes a seamless part of your morning routine. Better still, wear a daily moisturiser with tint that contains an SPF. Then, you don’t have to even think about your SPF application!”

Caring for blemishes the wrong way.

Call them zits, pimples, acne or blemishes. Bottom line: Most people will get them at certain periods in their life, and some will get them more severe than others. “Where most people go wrong is in how they treat the blemish once it appears,” Jacqueline says. “Picking at it—or what I like to refer to as ‘performing minor surgery in the mirror’—applying spot treatments and using the wrong breakout treatments on the wrong kinds of blemishes. All of these will result in a blemish lasting longer and leaving a post-breakout red or dark scar than can linger for months.”

She suggests “Instead, use a spot gel that contains niacinamide (which soothes the skin) and resist picking at it, and it’ll fade on its own. Over-treating the blemish will just irritate your skin, and picking it will cause the oil to spread, and leave you with a nasty scab that’s a lot harder to conceal than a tiny little pimple.”

Not taking care of your neck!

Most women know to apply moisturizer daily and nightly to their neck, and many do. But the mistake: Treating your neck as an afterthought. “A woman will typically rub moisturizer onto her face and then whatever is left over on her fingertips will extend down onto her neck,” Jacqueline says. Sound like you? “While the intention is good, it’s truly not helping that much in the quest for smooth, moist skin on the neck. This particularly applies with sunscreen, which is considered to be the best anti-aging product in the world. The little amount being applied as an afterthought is hardly enough to do its intended job because sunscreen needs to be applied generously in order to offer full sun protection.”

Not moisturising oily skin.

Regardless of your skin type, moisturising daily is non-negotiable. It’s beauty folklore that those with oily skin don’t need added moisture. Here’s the thing: Without moisturiser, oily skin will overcompensate for the lack of consistent hydration by producing more oil, which can lead to breakouts.Moisturiser adds water and hydration to the skin, not oil, so it’s a good thing!

Your eyes are delicate, be gentle!

Eye makeup can be really stubborn, especially if it is waterproof. But did you know the skin around your eyes is very thin and very susceptible to fine lines and wrinkles? When you scrub them with makeup remover or pull on the skin a lot it will start to sag early and that’s not a pretty look. You have to be very gentle with the eyes.
